COMPOSITION

Description: Music Composition will explore a wide variety of methods for creating music in two semesters (Fall and Spring). From composing using standard music notation, to graphic and text scores, to learning about electronics and building our own synthesizers, music composition is geared toward building familiarity with the myriad of ways that artists create.

Fall Semester will focus primarily on notation. Students will learn to draft sketches with standard and alternative notational methods (graphic and text based) as well as have the opportunity to perform each other’s scores using The bART recording studio at the end of the semester. Spring Semester will explore electronics in music (circuits and synthesis).

Course Goals: There will be a final project due at the end of each semester. This project will be chosen by the students individually with the only stipulation being that it will be notated.

MUSIC PRODUCTION

Description: In the ever-evolving landscape of modern music, it has become increasingly relevant for the well-rounded musician to learn music production skills. Behind every modern hip-hop or pop vocalist is a good music producer. In media and film composition there has been a substantial shift towards the use of virtual instrument, synthesizers, and interesting sound design to broaden sonic possibilities. Music producers also assist rock, jazz, country, folk blues, and classical musicians by recording and molding their music into a final, polished product.

Music production is the process of making music using a computer program known as a digital audio workstation (DAW). The primary focus of this course is to help students create music in a DAW from beginning to advanced levels. Students will gain an understanding of the fundamental creation process behind many genres of produced music and will have the ability to explore those genres. A focus on practical, analytical, and aural learning will give students the tools to reproduce sounds they are drawn to in order to craft their unique musical signature.

Course Goals: By the completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Record and manipulate audio
  • Create sounds using virtual synthesizers
  • Use audio effects such as EQ, reverb, delay, compression, and distortion
  • Program drum patterns
  • Expand short ideas into full tracks with contrasting sections
  • Listen to music analytically to learn and draw inspiration from it
  • Accumulate further knowledge from trusted sources and avoid pitfalls self-taught producers can fall into

Age Group: This class is intended for students as young as 10 years old and up. Depending on enrollment, class may be split into 2 age groups. This is a two-semester class.

Class instances: Once a week for 60 minutes. September 11th through December 4th. Mondays from 6:00-7:00pm. *12 sessions

Class materials/prerequisites:

  • No prior experience required!
  • Consistent access and comfortability with a laptop
  • Internet access
  • Speakers or headphones for use at home highly encouraged

MUSIC THEORY

Description: Whether you are studying privately with one of our bART instructors or studying privately outside of our school, our music theory classes are open to young musicians of all levels. The study of music theory is indispensable to the development of literate, well-rounded musicians. Intertwined with history, this class provides students with a sense of artistic chronology, repertoire, and an awareness of varied styles and style periods. This includes the study of musical training from a variety of cultures and traditions from Western and Eastern global classical traditions to a more contemporary understanding of popular nomenclature. Music theory develops the “seeing ear” (the ability to hear music and know how it should look in notation) and the “hearing eye” (the ability to see music and know how it should sound).

Course Goals: In this class, your child will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn the fundamentals of reading music (including note recognition in treble, bass, and alto clefs, scales and key signatures, intervals, simple and compound meters, and transposition)
  • Participate in ear training exercises such as group sight singing
  • Progress to the study of music analysis, form, chromatic harmony, and part writing
  • Build a solid foundation to further study at the college level and potentially pass placement exams
  • Work alongside likeminded peers
  • Familiarize themselves with musical “rules” to creatively break them, especially in composition and music production

Age Group: This class is intended for students 13 and up. A short consultation and/or placement exam with the instructor may be required to determine your child’s level.

Class instances: Once a week for 60 minutes. September 11th through December 4th. Mondays from 7:00-8:00pm. *12 sessions

Class materials/prerequisites:

  • No prior experience required
  • May be helpful for students to have general sense of keyboard orientation, but not required

Tuition: $350
